The OSI model recognizes 5 elements within the Network Management domain:
Configuration Management, the ability to determine the network map at any time, manage the inventory of data channels and other network commodities, and adjust operating parameters to achieve desired goals.
Error Detection, Fault Isolation and Recovery, the ability to self-diagnose connection faults and repair them by bypassing or rerouting to standby or backup paths.
Performance Monitoring, gauges, timestamps, overflow counters, utilization statistics, performance metrics, trace capabilities, aggregation and isolation, delay (latency), error rates, and their variances.
Accounting and Administration, tracking and tracing of accounts, storage space, data packet flow; capacity planning, efficiency evaluation,
Security; administration, authentication, encryption, firewalls, antivirus, user privacy issues,
In the OSI models, the CMIP/CMIS (Common Management Information Protocol/Services) standards are used to communicate the management information.
A more common set of deployed de-facto Network Management standards are SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), SNMP-2, and RMON (Remote MONitoring.)
Similarly, the SONET set of standards defines a set of Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OA&M) functions operable across the network, which are organized somewhat differently:
One area of active interest is the use of the datacom channel, at xxx kbits/s per STS-1 , and connecting to in- or out-band signalling.
A proposed scheme uses alternate window (e.g., 1300nm) as a control channel for switching/routing info.
