Field-Programmable Gate Arrays serve the fast time-to-market needs and flexibility for low-volume production, and also serve for rapid prototyping or ‘proof-of-concept’ demonstration vehicles. The programmable arrays provide custom logic capability at high levels of performance and moderate cost. They also have the potential to drive “run-time reconfiguration” and “evolvable machines.”

 

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC TECHNOLOGIES

SPLD (Simple Programmable Logic Device): used to be called PALs and GALs

CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device): Low gate count, predictable performance

FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array): Moderate gate count, flexible, high piece-price.

ASIC (Application-specific Integrated Circuit): Large gate count, upfront costs, low piece-price.

SoC (System-on-a-Chip): ASIC with internal multi-vendor IP, internal buses, broad function.

·        FPGAs and CPLDs are sometimes considered SoPCs, Systems-on-a-Programmable-Chip (or PSoCs)
